Chinese Export Black Lacquer and Mother-of-Pearl Folding Screen, Mid-20th Century
This striking mid-20th century Chinese folding screen features a deep black lacquer ground richly decorated with hand-applied mother-of-pearl inlay and fine gilt detailing.
The four-panel composition depicts a traditional garden pavilion scene with elegant figures, architectural elements, and landscape motifs rendered in iridescent shell against the dark lacquer surface. The inlaid decoration is carefully set into the lacquer, creating subtle relief and refined contrast.
The reverse side presents complementary botanical decoration, allowing the screen to function effectively within a space from multiple viewing angles.
Constructed in wood with a solid, substantial structure, the piece retains its original brass hinges and stands on shaped base supports. With a height of 183 cm and a total extended width of 190 cm, it serves both as a functional room divider and as a decorative statement element.
Condition is good vintage, showing age-appropriate wear consistent with mid-20th century production. The lacquer surface maintains a strong gloss with minor surface wear commensurate with age. The inlay remains intact with no significant losses observed.
